Occupation: Telephone Operator at Speers and Hawarden, Sask. [Maxine Hall]: Dean has worked in the telecommunications business for over 30 years. We were married in Sydney, Nova Scotia as Dean was in the airforce at the time and took electronics along with his basic training. We lived in Nova Scotia for a few years then returned to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan our home. We lived there for a few years, then an opportunity came up for Dean to travel to the Northwest Territories and work for CN Telecommunications. We moved up in 1967 and had our first son with us Aaron who was only 2 months old at that time. It was very interesting living in the north and quite remote and cold. Long winters with little daylight and summers with a lot of daylight. Dean flew all over the north working on the radio towers, now there are satellites that do all that. Our second son was born when we were there in 1969. In the early 1970´s we moved to Edmonton and Dean working for a different company but still in the field of telecommunications. In the 1980´s we moved here to Lloydminster where we still reside in our retirement. I have held different positions in secretarial and accounting over the years. I worked off and on for 30 years as well. We live only an hour and half from where my grandparents homesteaded in Speers,Saskatchewan. We have made a couple of trips there and have visited the St. Mary´s cemetery where my grandmother, mother and baby sister are buried. It is a few miles north of where the families farmed in the early days. My mother and dad left Speers in about 1948 to move to Hawarden, Saskatchewan where they ran a telephone office until 1955 when she passed away suddenly of a stroke. Uncle George and Aunt Pearl were to come up that summer and we were going to have a trip to the mountains but she died before it could happen. Uncle George died a few years after that. We had some wonderful trips to Duluth in the early days have lots of pictures. My sister Doraine lives in Kindersley, Saskatchewan about 2 hours from Lloydminster so I get to visit with her quite often and her daughter Debra and 3 grandchildren live in Saskatoon. I had the opportunity to visit with Haldor and Val about 2 years ago when I dropped off some old pictures of his mother and dad and also a wedding picture of Val and Haldor that mom must have had. Haldor said he had lost most of his pictures in a flood in his home in Calgary. |
